Futures Market & Commodities
On the oil market, declined steadily throughout the week as oversupply concerns, driven by ongoing OPEC supply increases and weak demand, outweighed geopolitical risks from the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Although there were brief gains linked to fears of supply disruptions and the restart of a key Russian crude depot after an attack, market sentiment remained bearish. Hopes for a Russia-Ukraine peace deal further pressured prices by raising the prospect of expanded Russian exports. The week closed at USD 62.56/bbl, the lowest since October 22.
European gas prices started the week firm due to cold weather, supply disruptions, and increased Ukrainian imports, reaching two weeks high of EUR 31.99/MWh on Tuesday. Prices then fell midweek as milder forecasts and ample supply eased concerns, and by Friday the benchmark contract hit an 18-month low at EUR 30.13/MWh, pressured by peace talks, strong LNG availability, and expectations of temperatures above seasonal norms.
European carbon prices traded in a narrow range between EUR 80-82/t throughout the week, as speculative investors ramped up their net long positions in EUAs for the third consecutive week, reaching nearly 102 million allowances, the highest level in at least seven years and likely a record. Despite this bullish investor activity, a lack of strong demand kept prices subdued, with the week’s high at EUR 81.89Tt and the close at EUR 80.41/t. On the supply side, 11.5 million EUAs were auctioned at an average price of EUR 80.57/t.
Finally, power futures presented a down trend last week. Q1 26 closed decreasing 3.6% at EUR 62.2/MWh, while Q2 26 decreased by 0.2% to EUR 40.2/MWh. Q3 26 decreased by 3% to EUR 64.5/MWh. For annual contracts, Cal 26 decreased by 2% to EUR 59.6/MWh, and Cal 27 decreased by 1.5% to EUR 58/MWh.
