Marginal costs climbed above USD 160/MWh this week
The average price in Polpaico was USD 45.7/MWh, up 20.1% from last week and 31.8% lower than the same week one year ago.

Marginal cost evolution in Polpaico during past years

In this week's generation mix, thermals share increased by a total of 4.2 pp, mainly driven by the increase in coal by 3.0 pp. Gas and oil also had an increase, each by 0.6 pp.
Hydro also increased in their share, with a rise in dam generation and in run-of-river generation by 0.4 pp and 0.6 pp, respectively.
In contrast, the combined share of wind and solar decreased, mainly due to a sharp 5.1 pp drop in wind share. Solar had a 0.6 pp decrease in share.
Generation peaked at 11.5 GW on Monday at 2 PM, with solar, wind and CSP accounting for 57.1% of the total output at that hour.
BESS share in the system peaked at 8 PM on Friday, representing 19.6% of the total output at that hour.

On Monday, marginal cost increased significantly all across the system, exceeding USD 160/MWh, with a peak around USD 190/MWh at 6 PM in Puerto Montt, with the oil-fired power plant Los Pinos setting the price at the moment.
As winter approaches and solar radiation declines, this week the 500 kV Nueva Pan de Azúcar - Polpaico line was not congested everyday during solar hours, only Monday, Tuesday and Sunday.
Puerto Montt also decoupled from the rest of the system this week. On Monday due to a congestion in 220 kV Lastarria - Ciruelos line, having higher prices in Puerto Montt than the rest of the system. On the other hand, on Saturday and Sunday, it was due to a congestion in 220 kV Charrúa - Santa Clara line, driven by high wind generation in the south part of the grid, which resulted in having zero prices in Puerto Montt.
Due to the mentioned congestions, there were three different prices across the system on Monday (north of Pan de Azúcar, Polpaico and Puerto Montt).
During the early hours of Saturday, coal generation was lower than on previous days due to an outage at Angamos 2 and the start of maintenance at Hornitos, both coal-fired power plants.

Solar and Wind production & BESS dispatch
Solar output increased by 1.2% | 4.5 GWh compared to last week. Regarding the plant factor, the highest was 21.1% in Cardones, while the lowest was 7.6% in Puerto Montt. The system-wide solar plant factor was 16.8%.
Wind generation declined this week by 35.1% | 73.1 GWh relative to last week. The highest plant factor was 28.4% in Crucero, while the lowest was 13.0% in Cardones. The system-wide wind plant factor was 20.0%.
BESS showed an increase in injections of 3.5% | 3.0 GWh, and an increase in charges by 0.3 GWh, relative to last week. Additionally, based on the hourly BESS dispatch profile, injections occur predominantly before midnight, resulting in a significant reduction in BESS injections during the early morning hours
This week, curtailment rates reached 5.4% | 11.8 GWh for wind and 6.1% | 27.5 GWh for solar. This resulted in a combined system-wide curtailment rate of 5.8%, which represents a decrease of 5.0 pp relative to last week.
